Welcome back.

In the previous article, we introduced Japan’s Startup Visa and how it works.
This time, let’s take a closer look at how it differs from the Business Manager Visa.

What is the Business Manager Visa?

The Business Manager Visa is a type of residence status for foreign nationals who either run their own company in Japan or manage a business as a company executive.

It is mainly intended for those who:

  • Have already established a company in Japan and plan to manage it
  • Will take on a management role in an existing company in Japan

📌 Key Requirements (planned under the new regulation)

  • Capital of at least ¥30 million deposited into a Japanese bank account
  • At least one full-time employee (Japanese or a foreign national with valid work authorization in Japan)
  • A physical office or business facility secured in Japan
  • A realistic and viable business plan prepared in advance

In short, under the new rules, the Business Manager Visa requires significant financial investment and a full business setup before applying.
Compared to the Startup Visa, it is no longer suitable for low-capital or trial business models.

◆ And the Startup Visa?

The Startup Visa, on the other hand, is designed for those who are still in the preparation phase.

Even if you haven’t registered your company or opened a bank account yet, you can still apply for this visa, enter Japan, and begin setting things up.

In other words, this visa supports your “first step” before full launch.
You’ll have up to two years to complete your preparations, then transition to the Business Manager Visa.

◆ So, which visa is right for you?

It depends on your current situation.

  • If you are already in Japan and your company, office, and capital are ready → Consider the Business Manager Visa
  • If you are outside Japan and want to prepare first → The Startup Visa may be a better fit

The Startup Visa is especially helpful for first-time entrepreneurs who want time and flexibility to explore, plan, and settle in before officially launching.

◆ Final thoughts

The Startup Visa and Business Manager Visa are not in competition — they serve different stages of the same journey.

Choosing the right one based on your timeline and readiness will help ensure a smoother application process and business success in Japan.
